My training for the 2010 London Triathlon began last night as I returned to the pool for the first time in over two years. The fact that I am woefully unfit, have never done any competitive cycling or running and have just realised how much work it will be have contributed to me actually getting off my arse and starting to get ready. Don’t think my 13th place finish at the National Livesaving Championships will help me here (seeing as I was slow as anything then too).

Having had a busy day at work I’d managed to eat only some cereal and a packet of crisps. Not the ideal preparation for the 1000m that I then covered.

It was nice to get in the water again and my new prescription goggles worked a wonder, although the layout of the pool was confusing regardless of sight. Had the usual problem of not wanting to go in the fast lane, but being too fast for the medium lane, so I just kept catching up with the swimmers ahead of me and stroking their feet. Need to get some new shorts as, to quote Alan Partridge, the elastic “had perished”

Covered the 1000m in about 35 minutes I think. Will ensure I check my timings next time, but it was a good start. Planning to go three times a week and monitor my progress in time and stamina here.

One of the reasons I have started this blog is to get some thoughts and inspiration on one of my projects.

The City of Stoke-on-Trent is my home town and a place that I’m incredibly proud to have come from. It’s not the best place in the world, but the people who live there are great, considering all they have gone through in the past. Most of the local industries have declined with the closing of the mines, the potteries and other factories and the city is becoming based on service industry alone.

For a place that has seen such creativity in the past, for a city that is in Staffordshire; “The Creative County”, and for an area that has two universities and three FE colleges, the branding of the city is so lacking in inspiration that it depresses me.

Which is why I’m determined to at least demonstrate that the city can produce some amazing creativity even if the institutions that might once have provided it are no longer there.

I already have several ideas for posters and already have some designs for some clothing sorted, so hopefully posting this will inspire me to get a move on with it.

In addition I have a name for my organisation:

Stoke Wares And Goods

This principally came from my long-running desire to one day sell bags branded SWAG, so hopefully that dream will soon come true! I’ve made a start on a corporate identity in my sketch book while travelling on the tube and I’ll put them up once I’ve got a bit of time to concentrate on it.
